Recent Advances in Hydroponics

Hydroponics is advancing as a promising alternative to land-based agriculture as we face global climate change. Not only it provides growers with a soil-free way of cultivating the crops, but also eliminates the dependency on rain and optimum weather for good yield. As hydroponic farming progresses rapidly, it is estimated that the industry will grow at an annual rate of 3.9% in the future.

A typical hydroponic system consists of a nutrient source that rests under or around the surface to grow plants. Major hydroponics systems are Wick, Deep Water Culture, Ebb and Flow, Drip, Nutrient Film Technique and Aeroponics. Apart from the basic setup, growers also prefer to use grow-rooms or glasshouses with temperature, humidity, and light controls. These rooms are usually built with smart sensors or detectors for monitoring moisture and temperature, advanced light systems, and sophisticated air filtration system.  Interestingly, some growers are also beginning to install imaging systems to keep a check on the growth progress. Advanced thermal cameras and drone-based high-definition cameras are rapidly being used for this purpose. Also, a much recent inclusion in hydroponics is the use of advanced robotic arms for the automated picking of fruits or vegetables. Automation and remote sensing combined with hydroponics is a remarkable solution for many small businesses that do not want to depend on intensive labour.

Further, with progressing research, the nutrient media available for soil-free farming have also evolved. Apart from basic blends of macro and micro-nutrients, we now have smart solutions for specific needs. For example, nutrient circulation systems may become deficient in nitrogen over time, but with the availability of products like Nitro Boost, plants can be supplied with optimum nitrogen, especially in young stages. Further, Bloom enhancers are available for multiplying fruit set and for enhancing the size of the produce. For herbaceous plants such as coriander, mint, and rosemary, the growth can be improved by using MegaYield solutions which offer a unique blend of vitamins, minerals, and hormones to promote shoot growth.

Growers may need different products based on their farming practices and we at HomeGrow are proud to supply some of the best hydroponics infrastructure and solutions. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
